Virtuoso Vidhu Vinod Chopra
He is an academy award nominated Indian producer and filmmaker. He heads Vinod Chopra Productions, which is one of the busiest production houses in India. One of his brothers, Ramanand Sagar, was an eminent filmmaker. He was fascinated by his brother’s movies and soon started dreaming of making his own movies. To pursue his dream, he went to learn film direction at the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune.
His first student film, Murder At Monkey Hill won the National Film Award for the Best Short Experimental Film and the Guru Dutt Memorial Award for Best Student Film. His short documentary, An Encounter with Faces was nominated for an Academy Award in the non-fiction film category in 1979.
His first feature film was Sazaa-E-Maut (Death Row) with tight budget. It involved actor Naseeruddin Shah and editor Renu Saluja who were his fellow students at FTII.
His works include Khamosh, Parinda, 1942: A Love Story, Mission Kashmir, the Munna Bhai series, Parineeta, Eklavya: The Royal Guard and Three Idiots. He has won several National Awards, Filmfare awards, Star Screen Awards and IIFA Awards. Vinod Chopra Productions has a co-production deal with Anil Ambani’s Reliance BIG Pictures. Vidhu is to direct an English film called Broken Horses staring Mickey Rourke.
Vidhu was married to Renu Saluja who was his long time friend but the marriage ended in divorce. He later married writer Anupama Chopra who is a movie reviewer with NDTV and India Today.
Even when he is just a producer, he would go beyond his means to be actively involved in with the film. He has worked with some of the best acting talents that India has ever seen. This multitalented director-producer-writer is passionate about creating films based on original scripts and is known for the originality of his films.
