As soon as you hear "Chaiyya Chaiyya", you think of trains, SRK, and Sukhwinder Singh! The Punjabi Bollywood singer and composer became a mega sensation with this song.
As a child he either wanted to be an athlete; he was a very good runner, or he wanted to be a singer. Music strongly beckoned him and thus, he followed! He gave his first stage performance at the age of eight. During the initial years of his career, he sang for a few movies but he realized that something was missing. He took a short break and toured England and America to understand the various forms of music. After broadening his musical horizons, he returned to Mumbai to kick-start his musical career.
He is grateful for his success to Lakshmikant Pyarelal and AR Rahman. Singh joined Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s troupe and became a music arranger, before heading to the south India to look for work and Rahman gave him the chance to sing “Chaiyya Chaiyya" for Mani Ratnam’s film Dil Se; which won him the Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback. He has also won the Filmfare Best Male Playback Award for the song "Haule Haule" from the movie Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. When he was recording "Jai Ho" for Slum dog Millionaire in the studio, he did not know that it was for an international film. This song won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. He had no idea that it was going to be such a huge international success!
Singh believes that if you are talented, you cannot be insecure. For him, success means conquering a platform to meet more geniuses in life. It’s safe to say that he is successful; not only has he met and worked with some of the greatest musical geniuses, he himself is one!
