Sujata
Sujata directed and produced by Bimal Roy released in 1959, is regarded as one of the best classics in Indian Cinema. It was written by Nabendu and Subodh Ghosh and Paul Mahendra. The movie had a social message to society that prejudice against untouchables should be abolished and inter-caste marriages are possible.
The multi star cast consists of Nutan, Sunil Dutt, Lalita Pawar, Shashikala, Sulochana, Tarun Bose and Lalita Pawar. The movie had songs by S.D. Burman like ‘jalte hain jiske liye”.
The story is about Sujata (Nutan) who is an orphan and is from the untouchable caste. She looked after by a kind uppercaste Brahim engineer Upendranath Choudhury (Tarun) and his reluctant to accept the child, wife Charu (Sulochana). Although she was sheltered in the Choudhury house temporarily she stays there till she becomes an adult. Sujata is loved very much by Upen and is treated with great respect. But Charu can never accept Sujara as her own daughter Rama (Shashikala).
Although never feeling the prejudice for being an untouchable when being brought up, as soon as the Choudhury’s find a match for Rama the family opposes Sujata’s presence as she is an untouchable. They agree to accept Rama in their family only after Sujata’s married off. Adhir (Sunil) falls in love with Sujata despite being engaged to Rama. The two soon fall in love and Charu finds out that Adhir wants to marry Sujata instead of her own daughter and is enraged at this.
She only accepts Sujata and Adhir’s relationship after an incident takes place, where Charu falls down the stairs and has severe blood loss. Sujata’s blood is the only one that matches the rare blood type and she thus donates blood to Charu saving her life. Sujata and Adhir finally get married with everyone’s blessings.
