Shreya Ghoshal
The gifted Shreya Ghoshal
This Bengali girl was raised in Rajasthan. She comes from a family of academics but her family recognized her talent at a very young age and gave her formal training in classical Hindustani Music. Shreya Ghoshal had participated in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and won. One of the judges, Kalyanji, convinced her family that she was too good not to try singing professionally and to move to Mumbai. She trained under Kalyanji for 18 months and later under Mukta Bhide.
When she again participated in Sa Re Ga Ma Pa as a young adult, she was recognized by director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Ismail Darbar, the music director of Devdas, decided to make her the voice of Paro, one of the lead characters in the movie. She received an IFA Award, Zee Cine Award, National Film Award, and Filmfare Award for best female play back singer, and the Filmfare RD Burman Award for New Music Talent for her first film. She is the only singer to get three national awards at the age of 25 in the Hindi film industry. Her songs “Jaadu Hai Nasha Hai” from Jism, “Mera Dholna” from Bhool Bhulaiyaa, “Teri Ore from Singh Is King”, “Yeh Ishq Haaye” from Jab We Met and “Barso Re” from Guru are all smashing hits worth mentioning. Besides singing in Hindi, she has sung in a number of other regional languages including Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Bengali, Kannada, Gujarati, Meitei, Marathi, and Bhojpuri.
Shreya has completed her graduation and is planning to do Masters in Literature. She is one of the most sought after singers not only in the North India and Bollywood, but also in the south! Her soothing voice is perfect for any mesmerizing and romantic song. Though she enjoys symphony and western music, Indian music is her soul.
