Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a talented Bollywood director who has shown his passion, talent and creativity in all the movies that he has directed. He is a graduate from the Film and Television Institute of India. He is sure of about his movies and the idea that he wants to portray through his movies.
Bhansali used to be director Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s assistant. He made his directorial debut with Khamoshi: The Musical staring Nana Patekar, Salman Khan and Manisha Koirala. The movie was about a young girl born to deaf and mute parents and their lives. Though the movie was unsuccefful at the box office, it was critically acclaimed and won several awards. This movie highlights the relationship between parent and child. Bhansali’s mother was an inspiration for him always. As a tribute to her strength and sacrifice, he took his mother’s name as his middle name.
His next three movies were box office hits. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was a triangular love story, which was an adoption of the Bengali novel Na Hanyate. The movie helped him establish his individualistic stamp. Devdas was a musical and visual extravaganza and India’s official entry to the Oscars. Black was a tale of a deaf, mute and blind girl and her teacher. Black broke a record at the 2006 Filmfare Awards, winning eleven awards. Unfortunately, his next creation, Saawariya was rather a flop.
Bhansali has always been able to make a deep emotional connection with his audiences through his movies. He has always felt very strongly about music as he did about movies. He even composed the song “Thode Badmash” in Saawariya. His upcoming film Guzaarish, will be his debut as a music director. Success has given him the opportunity to make the kind of films that excite him… and us!
