Roti Kapda Aur Makan directed, produced and written by Manoj Kumar released in 1974, is regarded as one of the best movies in Indian Cinema.
The multi star cast consists of Manoj Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman, Moushumi Chatterjee, Shashi Kapoor and Aruna Irani. The movie had songs by Laxmikant-Pyarelal like “hay hay yeh majboori” and “main na bhoolunga”.
The story is about Bharat (Manoj), his parents, brothers Vijay (Amitabh), Deepak (Dheeraj) and sister Champa (Meena T). After his father’s retirement Bharat takes on the responsibility of running the household. He can’t get a proper job despite being a graduate and makes do as a low-paid singer. His frustrated girlfriend Sheetal (Zeenat) is waiting for him to settle down so she can enjoy the riches of life. Seeing such hardships, Vijay and Bharat fight and Vijay says he’ll only come back to the house after he becomes stable. He goes on to become an army officer later on and Deepak becomes a police officer.
Sheetal, a secretary is enamored by her boss Mohan Babu (Shashi) a rich entrepreneur. The two become involved after Sheetal realizes that Bharat can’t provide her with the basic necessities of life. She accepts Mohan’s proposal of marriage. A heart broken Bharat soon finds a job as a builder. His sister gets a marriage proposal but he can’t pay for the wedding.
He comes across Tulsi (Moushmi) and Sardar Harnam Singh (Prem Nath) on his quest to earn money. Touched by their simplicity he turns to them for comfort. But then Bharat’s father passes away as he couldn’t provide for the medicines. He is jailed for trying to steal medicines. Bharat then decides that he’ll let go off his values and become a rich man. He achieves this and loses his self respect in the process.
