Ram Teri Ganga Maili
Ram Teri Ganga Maili directed by Raj Kapoor and produced by Randhir Kapoor released in 1985, is regarded as one of the best classics in Indian Cinema. It was Raj Kapoor’s last film.
The multi star cast consists of Rajiv Kapoor, Divya Rana, Saeed Jaffrey, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Mandakini. It was written by Raj Kapoor, V.P. Sathe, K.K. Singh and Jyoti Swaroop. The movie had songs by Ravindra Jain like “ram teri ganga maili”, “ek radha ek meera” and “sun sahiba sun”.
The stories about Narendra (Rajiv) son of a rich Calcutta politician Jeeva Sahay (Kulbhushan). He visits Gangotri, a small village and comes across a pretty village girl Ganga (Mandakini). They fall in love and get married and Ganga becomes pregnant. Narendra has to go back to the city to convince his parents about Ganga and promises to return to her. He’s unable to do so because of certain circumstances.
Because of her beauty and being a single mother, society tries to take advantage of the situation. She faces a lot of problems and decides to go in search of Narendra. In her journey from her village to the big city, she gets exploited by a lot of people and turns to a brothel for survival. She feels that Narendra may not want her now that she’s impure.
Narendra on the other hand, was told that Ganga is dead and his marriage is being arranged to another woman according to his father’s wishes. An unaware Ganga is asked to come and dance at her husband’s wedding where the lovers finally re-unite. They try to leave but Jeeva won’t hear of it. He shoots Ganga and realizes he’s hurt his son more. This causes Narendra to leave with Ganga forever so they can finally have the life they dreamed of.
