Ram Gopal Varma
A different director… Ram Gopal Varma
Ram Gopal Varma is an out of the ordinary film director and producer. He was a college drop out with no formal background and training in films expect for owning a video shop. This Hyderabadi started his career in the Telugu film industry as an assistant director and worked his way to Bollywood. His debut film was Shiva, an efficacious Telugu movie.
His second Kshana Kshanam, was another huge hit, but unfortunately his following few flicks did very poorly. It was Gaayam, an underworld epic that placed him back on top. Although Raat was his debut Hindi film, Rangeela put him in the spot light. This movie truned Urmila Matondkar’s and A. R. Rahman’s careers drastically; they became big names over night. Though he tired to recreate the same magic with Daud, it was quite a flop! In 1998, Varma’s Satya, which was based on the Mumbai underworld, was highly recognized. He did extensive research on Mumbai organized crime for this film, and he worked with only a shoestring budget. He created a new trend in Bollywood with gangster films. Company was another one of his masterpieces.
Varma prefers to use new actors and technicians in his films rather than established ones. He gave people like Sandeep Chowta and Vishal Bharadwaj opportunities to shine. In the movie industry, where the songs played an integral part, he chose to cut out the song and dance sequences to avoid interruption of flow narration. Instead, he provided us with excellent background scores. His films are released under the banner of his own production house, Varma Corporation that is better known as the “Factory”. Although he admires many directors, he chooses to stick to his own style. His gangster and horror films and his experimentation in films set him apart from the rest.
