Pyaasa
Pyaasa directed and produced by Guru Dutt released in 1957 is regarded as one of the best classics in Indian cinema. Based on the book ‘Prem’ by Chandra Shekhar, the original choices for the lead actresses were Nargis and Madhubala and Dilip Kumar for the main lead.
The multi star cast consists of Guru Dutt, Mala Sinha, Waheeda Rehman, Johnny Walker and Rehman. It was written by Abrar Alvi. The movie had songs by S.D. Burman like “sar jo tera chakraye” and “hum aapki aankhon mein”.
The story is about a struggling poet Vijay (Guru) who keeps getting humiliated for his failure. As a result of which he roams the streets and comes across Gulabo (Waheeda) who’s a prostitute. She falls in love with him and his poetry.
Meena (Mala) used to be Vijay’s girlfriend in college. She’s now married to a successful and famous publisher Mr. Ghosh (Rehman). He hires Vijay as a servant to find out about Meena’s past. Vijay had one day given his coat to a beggar who dies in a train accident and is mistaken for being Meena’s ex flame. Vijay gets hospitalized after he tried to save the beggar and Gulabo goes to Ghosh to get Vijay’s poems published. Ghosh agrees to do this to exploit the poems now that according to him Vijay’s dead.
Vijay’s friends and family commit him to a mental asylum as they refuse to recognize him for a payoff by Ghosh. Vijay escapes with his friend Abdul Sattar (Johnny). He reaches a memorial service being held in his name where his friends and family admit that he’s indeed Vijay and tries to sell his poems to a rival publisher for a higher price. Vijay disgusted at the materialistic world leaves the society to start a new life with Gulabo.
