Priyadarshan
Priyadarshan from Mollywood to Bollywood
Priyadarshan is known for his popular Hindi films, which are remakes of his previous Malayalam films. He father was a dramatist who also worked in the University library. He developed the habit of reading and by the time he was out of college, he read almost all the works of many great writers. Growing up, his ambition was to become a cricketer, but because of an injury to his left eye by a cricket ball, that dream was short lived. Even today, when he goes out in public, he wears dark glasses.
It was his close friend and college junior, Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, who encouraged him to enter the film industry. His first movie Poochakkoru Mookkuthi, staring Mohanlal was highly successful. He had a long string of blockbuster in Malayalam with his friend and favorite actor. It was the new look and slapstick comedy inspired by Mickey Mouse and Charlie Chaplin, in his films that made them so successful. Priyadarshan entered Bollywood in 1992 with Muskurahat, which was a remake of his Malayalam films Kilukkam. Though the original was a blockbuster, the remake went largely unnoticed. It was not until his Gardish that he became recognized. He had made a remake of the Tamil film Thevar Magan in Hindi called Virasat. This was his first big Bollywood hit, which established his career in the north. Hera Peri, Garam Masala and Bhool Bulaiyya were some of his most brilliant Hindi films.
There have been many criticisms revolving around Priyadarshan regarding plagiarism. His Hindi films are all remakes of Malayalam successful films, which in turn are remakes of old Hollywood hits. The original directors of the movies are rarely given any recognition. Despite the remarks, he is still satisfied and successful with the niche he carved for himself in Bollywood.
