Nida Fazli
Patriot and Lyricist: Nida Fazli
Muqtida Hasan Nida Fazli aka Nida Fazli is an Urdu poet and Hindi lyricist. During the India-Pakistan partition, his family migrated to Pakistan while he decided to stay back. By hearing bhajan singer he was inspired to make his first serious attempt at poetry. He felt that there are limitations of Urdu poetry; he widened his horizon of poetry app recitation through the study of T.S. Eliot, Gogol, Anton Chekhov and Takasaki.
In 1964, Nida came in search of a job to Mumbai. He used to write in Dharmayug and Blitz till he was noticed by many eminent film personalities for his unique style of poetry. One of the remarkable points of his writings is the exclusive use of the colloquial language for ghazals, dohaas and nazms. To make his poetry a common place, he avoids Persian imagery and compound words. He wrote the famous stanza; ‘Duniya jise kehte hain jaadu kaa Khilona hai Mil jaaye to mitti hai kho jaaye to sona hai’. He was boycotted from some poetic sessions as he wrote some critical essays on the poetry of the contemporary poets of the sixties in his book Mulaqatein.
Bollywood beckoned him through Kamal Amrohi, a filmmaker. He approached Nida to write two more songs for his film Razia Sultan. His graceful lyrics were recognized, as a result of which he started receiving increasing offers to write lyrics for Hindi films. His ghazals and various compositions were sung by almost all the reputed artistes of the day.
He has written extensively against the communal riots, scheming politicians and fundamentalism. Nida is a poet of various moods. To him the creative sentiment and inner urge are the sources of poetry. He thinks that the feeling of a poet is similar to an artist, like a painter or a musician.
