Mughal-e-Azam
Mughal-e-Azam’s regarded as a timeless classic in Indian cinema. Directed and produced by K. Asif this epic love story took nine years and Rs. 10.5 million to finish back in 1960. It was the highest grossing film of all times till the 1970’s hit Sholay. Mughal-e-Azam was remade in 2004 with the color version, which again grossed in millions worldwide.
The multi star cast consists of Prithviraj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Madhubala, Durga Khotea and Nigar Sultana. The music director and lyricist is Naushad. The writers are Aman, Kamal Amrohi, K. Asif, Wajahat Mirza and Ehsan Rizvi.
The movie created a trend of sorts with the song ‘Jab Pyar Kiya’ daring lovers to fear their opposers bravely. The story is about Emperor Jalaluddin Mohammed Akbar (Prithviraj) and Empress Jodha Bai (Durga) who have a son named Saleem (Dilip). He falls in love with a dancer, Anarkali (Madhubala) and wants to marry her.
Bahaar’s (Nigar) a senior dancer; jealous of their love exposes the secret affair to his famly. She wanted to be with Saleem so she could take the crown after the Empress. Akbar refuses to let Saleem wed Anarkali as she’s only a mere dancer and imprisons her in jail. She still doesn’t give up on their love and Saleem rebels against his father. Saleem challenges his father to a battle to free his love but loses and is sentenced to death. Anarkali begs for Saleem’s life to be spared and bargains that instead of him, her life should be taken. She is shown to Saleem as being walled up alive but her mother had taken advantage of a favor Akbar owed her and pleads for Anarkali’s life to be spared. He agrees and arranges for Anarkali to make a secret escape where she lives in exile.
