Modern day lyricist: Mehboob

The Bollywood lyricist and poet, Mehboob moved to Mumbai as young boy. His father was very keen on keeping him out of the film industry and in the family business, but his persistence and his writing abilities paved his way to writing many songs for Hindi movies. One of the first to recognize his skills was Ismail Darbar. Mehboob had a nag of composing lyrics at crowed places rather than secluded places, so he and Darbar always worked in tandem, composing lyrics and songs at Mehboob’s pet shop. Darbar has always been a guide and philosopher in his life advising him with the current trends of Bollywood. It was he who taught Mehboob the difference between poetry and film lyrics.

Ram Gopal Varma’s Drohi, was Menboob first opportunity to show his talent to Bollywood. In 1995, both the lyricist and the director worked together with A.R. Rahman for Rangeela, which was a musical phenomenon. The songs were a rage throughout the land and this paved way for the new lyricist. Mani Ratnam’s Bombay was another feather to his cap. A.R.Rahman and he came together for his non-film album; Maa Tujhe Salaam. ‘Vande Mataram’ was one of the most popular songs from the album. He worked with Rahman also for films such as Thakshak, Doli Saja Ke Rakhna and Dil Hi Dil Mein. 1999 was a prominent year for him; Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam gave him the opportunity to work with his old friend Ismail Darbar. Yuva was one of his other major achievements. He wrote the lyrics for KK’s albums; Pal and Humsafar.

Even with fame and recognition, Mehboob prefers to lead a quite simple life. He still manages his pet shop in Mumbai and makes it a point to watch and read National Geographic magazine and informative channels.
