Intrepid Director Madhur Bhandarkar
Madhur Bhandarkar is a three-time National Award winning filmmaker. He grew up facing rough times. He is a school drop out who used to work as an errand boy at a video store where he would drop of cassettes to people from different walks of life.
He was an assistant to director Ashok Gaikwad Bhandarkar and later to Ram Gopal Varma. He has worked on the pilot episode of the TV serial Apne Rang Hazaar, which proved to be futile. His first film, Trishakti, took more than two years in the making. He seemed to have met with another dead end as this movie went unrecognized. His second film, Chandini Bar was highly acclaimed and took him to the top league of directors in Bollywood. Fortune was by his side. He has a series of successful films one after another. Page 3, a movie about the glamorous world of celebrity lifestyle did tremendously well at the box office.
He admits that his next film, Corporate was a very challenging film, as he knew that the corporates would not appreciate him for his Page 3. It was a movie about the dark side of the business world. Fashion was another film that helped Bhandarkar reach great heights in his career. It was about the fashion world and what really happened behind the cameras. Former Vice President of India and BJP leader L.K.Adwani appreciated him for his latest film; Jail, which is about the cruel realities faced by prisoners in Indian jails.
Bhandarkar often prefers to have strong females as the lead protagonist. His movies are a platform to express his views they reflect the society for what it really is. From selling chewing gum at traffic signals, he is now one of India’s leading and reputed directors and scriptwriters.
