Kohli’s Journey to Great Heights
Kunal Kohli came from a middle class family who started his career as a film critic. He had his own show, "Chalo Cinema" on Zee TV. He had directed several music videos before he came into mainstream film direction. Some of his better known music videos are Bally Sagoo’s ‘Mera Laung Gawacha’, Shiamak Davar’s ‘Jaane Kisne’ and Alisha Chinoy’s ‘Yeh Hai Prem’.
His first Bollywood directorial was Mujhse Dosti Karoge which came out in 2002 staring Hrithik Roshan, Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor. The movie had a great star cast, fantastic locations, wonderful songs and a good story line but the movie did not do so well at the box office. He has directed four movies with Yash Raj Films. His second film Hum Tum staring Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji was the biggest hit in 2004. This movie established his career and made him a known director. He has won five Film Fare Awards, one of which he won against his mentor, Yash Chopra. Eminent actress, Kajol, made her Bollywood come back in Kohli’s Fanna. She was paired opposite Aamir Khan. Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic will be his last film with Yash Raj Films as he has been released from his contract with the production house. He ventures out to start his own production house under the name of Kunal Kohli Productions. As Yash Chopra had helped him learn the intricacies of filmmaking, he too similarly wants to help young aspiring filmmakers.
His movies are inspired by real-life characters in grey shades. Like the great directors that he draws inspiration from such as Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt, Manoj Kumar and Yash Chopra, he too wanted to be producer as well as director. He wants his film to be his own and have the complete authority over them.
