Kumar Sanu
Vocal Legend Kumar Sanu
Kumar Sanu was born as Kedarnath Bhattacharya. He is a leading Indian playback Bollywood singer from Kolkata with a deep and mellow voice. He is the proud recipient of the Padma Shri award and has won the Filmfare Best Male Playback Singer Award for five consecutive years. According to his calculation, he has recorded over eight thousand songs so far.
His father was an accomplished classical vocalist and composer who trained Sanu to sing and play the tabla. This commerce graduate initially sang at shows and restaurants. After being recognized by Jagjit Singh, Kalyanji-Anandji suggested that he change his name from Kedar Nath Bhattacharya to Kumar Sanu to avoid caste or region-based favoritism, which was prevalent in Bollywood at the time. During the initial years he sang in the style of Kishore Kumar before he developed his own style of singing. Sanu’s breakthrough came in 1990, when he sang almost all the songs for Aashiqui. All the songs were an instant hit! He won the Filmfare awards for Best Male Playback Singer for five years in a row for Aashiqui (1990), Saajan (1991), Deewana (1992), Baazigar (1993), and 1942: A Love Story (1994).
In late 1990s, Sanu became more selective with the songs that he chose. He ventured into acting and appeared in a Bengali film and stared in television serials in both Bengali and Hindi. He is also the producer for a new Bollywood film, Utthaan.
He broke a Guinness World Record by singing twenty-eight songs in a single day in 1993. It was his unparalleled ability to quickly and effortlessly master unfamiliar material in the studio that helped him achieve this. With a career spanning over two decades in the industry, Kumar Sanu is often credited with having one of the best voices among playback singers in India.
