Kaagaz Ke Phool
Kaagaz Ke Phool’s regarded as one of the best movies in Indian cinema. Directed by Guru Dutt it was written by Abrar Alvi. This 1959 release earned place 160 in the list of greatest films of all time. The movie was initially a flop but gained commercial success in the eighties.
The multi star cast consists of Waheeda Rehman, Guru Dutt, Baby Naaz, Mahmood and Johnny Walker. The music was composed by S.D. Burman and had the superhit song waqt ne kiya sung by Geeta Dutt.
The movie’s about Suresh Sinha (Guru) a famous movie film director who is married to Bina (Veena). He’s not respected amongst her family as they look down on him for his choice of career. His daughter Pammi (Naaz) resides in a boarding school.
One rainy day Sinha comes across a stranger, Shanti (Waheeda) who he gives his coat too. She finds him in a studio again when she comes to return his coat and she’s caught on camera while doing this. Suresh realizes that Shanti is very camera friendly and can make it as a star.
He casts her as Paro in the movie Devdas. She becomes a superstar with the movie and Shanti and Suresh develop feelings for each other. Pammi faces a lot of humiliation at school because of her father’s link up with the actress. She goes and talks to Shanti telling her to let her parents have another chance at their marriage. Shanti leaves the movie industry and relocates to a small village as a school teacher.
Suresh goes into depression after Shanti leaves and becomes an alcoholic. His career takes a backseat. As Shanti had a contract with the studio she is forced to return to the glam industry. At the end Sinha dies alone in an empty film studio.
