Jis Des Mein Ganga Behti Hai
Jis Des Mein Ganga Behti Hai directed by Radhu Karmakar and produced by Raj Kapoor released in 1960, is regarded as one of the best classics in Indian Cinema. It was written by Arjun Dev Rashk.
The multi star cast consists of Raj Kapoor, Padmini, Lalita Pawar, Sulochana and Pran. The movie had songs by Shankar Jaikishan like ‘o basanti’, ‘jis desh mein ganga behti hai’, ‘aa ab lout chalein’ and ‘hothon pe sacchai’.
The story is about Raju (Raj) a simple villager who makes his living as a singer. He comes across an injured man one day and tries to help him not knowing that he is a bandit. But he soon gets abducted by a group of dacoits thinking that he’s an undercover policeman.
He then finds out that the injured bandit is Sardar (Pran), the leader of the group. Because Raju saved Sardar’s life, he’s welcomed like a family member in the group. There he meets Kammo (Padmini) Sardar’s daughter. They fall in love with each other and she assures a naïve Raju that her father’s work is nothing to be ashamed of. She tells him they’re socialists and they try to take from the rich and give to the poor.
Raju’s world’s turned upside down when he goes with Sardar’s group when they rob a wedding. Innocent people get killed and disgusted he goes to the Police. But the Police want to kill them. Unable to think of them dead, he tries to go and warn them, but they shun him for betraying them. Another bandit Raka kills Sardar and forcibly takes over his people and tries to wed his daughter. Raju makes everyone in the gang realize that their way is wrong and tells them to give themselves up to the police, which they do.
