Jewel Thief
Jewel Thief directed by Vijay Anand and produced by Dev Anand released in 1967 is regarded as one of the best classics in Indian cinema. It’s inspired from the Hollywood movie A Fistful of Dollars. Jewel Thief became an instant box office hit.
The multi star cast consists of Dev Anand, Ashok Kumar, Vyjayanthimala and Tanuja. It was written by Vijay Anand and K.A. Narayan. The movie had songs by S.D. Burman like “hothon pe aisi baat” and “raat akeli hai”.
The movie’s story’s about a young man named Vinay (Dev) who is the son of Police Commissioner (Nasir Hussain) being mistaken for a jewel thief Amar. The Jewel Thief has left the Police Department humiliated with its daring heists. The Commissioner sets a deadline for himself to capture the thief and bring order back in the city. Anjali the daughter of a well-known jeweler Seth Bishwambar Das (Sapru) who also happens to be Vinay’s boss falls for Vinay.
Shalini (Vyjayantimala) and her brother (Ashok) come from Gangtok, mistake Vinay as her fiancé. Despite knowing that he’s not her real fiancé she falls in love with him. Vinay joins forces with the police to capture the thief by taking on Anand’s identity. He goes to Sikkim where it’s the thief’s hideout. It’s then revealed Shalini’s brother her brother and is the real theif. He had captured her brother (Master Sachin) and blackmailed her.
He wanted to throw suspicion off himself to have Amar take the heat for the heists. Vinay’s then subjected to shock treatments by the villain to brainwash him into admitting he’s the real jewel thief. Vinay overhears it and plays along but has informed the Police already. The climax has the Police capturing the real thief and Shalini and Vinay end up together.
