This Urdu poet, lyricist and scriptwriter is one of the most successful of his kind in Bollywood. Javed Akhtar comes from long line of poets; the tradition of writing goes back to seven generations in the family. After earning his bachelor’s degree in Arts, he focused his attention to Bollywood to become one of the most sought after lyricists.
He started his career by writing dialogues for minor films and occasionally used to work as an assistant. Some of his most successful work was done in the late 1970s and 1980s with Salim Khan as half of the script-writing duo credited as Salim-Javed. Javed Akhtar has not worked with his old associate Salim Khan; the father of Salman, Arbaz, and Sohail Khan, since their split up. Javed used to write his scripts originally in Urdu, which were then written out in Hindi by his assistant. Javed Akhtar is the father of the film director Farhan Akhtar, the father and son duo has worked together in movies such as Dil Chahta Hai, Lakhshya and Rock On!!
He has written a large number of poems against Communalism, Social Injustice, and National Integration and for Women’s Rights. He composed a song, urging the misguided youth to come forward and build the country, which was declared the National Anthem for Youth by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 1995. He has revealed himself to be an atheist. Besides being honored with the prestigious Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan, he has won the National Award five times and has been awarded the Filmfare Best Lyricist Award 19 times.
He is a member of the advisory board of Asian Academy Of Film And Television. His name alone spells romance, intellect and aesthetics. Javed Akhtar’s songs are rhythmic, reflective on life and very melodic and catchy.
