Immortal melodies of Ismail Darbar
Ismail Darbar is from Gujarat. He knew that music was his calling from a very young age. Darbar’s father was an accomplished clarinet and saxophone player. He began his training with his father playing the violin. Music soon became his soul. For being a supposed “brat” at home he was sent to Mumbai. To make a living he became a session violinist for Bollywood. He worked with many renounced music directors including Laxmikant Pyarelal, Kalyanji Anandji, Bappi Lahiri, Rajesh Roshan, Anand-Milind, Nadeem-Shravan, Jatin-Lalit and even A.R.Rahman. He worked closely with the best amongst them and soon, he became ambitious to be a music director himself.
When he was working with Jatin-Lalit in the movie Khamoshi: The Musical, he met Sanjay Leela Bhansali. A mutual friend recommended Darbar to Bhansali when he was looking for a music director for his new movie, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Bhansali was surprised at the mention of such a new and inexperienced person for the role, but not wanting to be rude, he gave Darbar an opportunity to prove that he was worthy of the role. He gave Darbar two situations in his movie and asked him to come up with suitable music. To his amazement, Darbar had come up with tunes that were perfect! He had worked with Bhansali for Devdas as well, which was another musical success. Ismail Darbar has worked on ten movies as a music director. He is a National Award winner for his music in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
He aspires to compose different styles of music so that industry and his audiences can see his musical versatility. His love for music will not allow him to compromise on quality; he has turned down many projects on the same ground. He would rather create immortal melodies than money.
