Harivanshrai Bachchan
Ph.D poet and lyricist Harivanshrai Bachchan
Shri Harivansh Rai Bachhan is renowned poet and lyricist who gave eternal songs like "Madhushala". After graduation, he was drawn into the vortex of the freedom struggle. Having a short stint as a journalist, he had joined as a teacher in the local Agarwal Vidyalaya and at the same time, tried to pursue both M.A. and B.T. He eventually joined the Allahabad University as an English Literature and later, became the first Indian to acquire a Ph.D in English Literature from Cambridge. At the request of Jawaharlal Nehru, he joined the Hindi Cell in the Union Ministry of External Affairs in 1955 to translate official documents from English into Hindi, which he had continued till his retirement.
Harivansh Rai wrote combining mature subtlety with discretion. His creative career began in 1932 and continued till 1995. The underlying messages of some of his works were the meaninglessness of the sordid worldly ambitions, greed, and intolerance in religion, morality and behavior. He gave to Hindi poetry an entirely new dimension by challenging the sickening conventionalism and moralists. Harivansh tried to evolve his own version of sonnet and in harmony with its own poetic style.
Instead of following the traditional pattern, his lyrics consisted of 13 lines suited for the Hindi language. Beginning with a cry of loneliness and ending with an assurance, the basic imagery of these lyrics were linked with the darkness and the light symbolizing his grief and hope. He has contributed to the Indian film Industry with his songs ‘Rang barse‘ from Yash Chopra’s ‘Silsila’ and ‘Koi gata main so jata’ for the movie ‘Aalap’.
He was deeply moved by his surroundings and was very expressive in his writings. He clearly depicted what he saw. As he was a legendary poet, his son is a legendary actor; Amitabh Bachhan.
