Do Bigha Zameen
Do Bigha Zameen is regarded as one of the best classics in Indian cinema. Directed and produced in 1953 by Bimal Roy it was the first Indian movie to win the Filmfare Best Movie Award and the first Indian film to win the International Prize at the Cannes Film Festival. This movie created the genre of Indian neo-realist movement movies which followed after the 1950’s.
The multi star cast consists of Balraj Shani, Nirupa Roy, Ratan Kumar, Jagdeep, Murad and Nana Palsikar. The writers are Salil Choudhury and Paul Mahendra. Salil also composed the music for this movie.
Do Bigha Zamin’s named after Ranindranath Tagore’s poem called Du Bigha Jomi. The movie is about a Bengali farmer Shambhu Maheto (Balraj) who has been hit by famine. He owes the local feudal lord Thakur Harnam Singh some money. Thakur wants to take Shambhu’s land and build a mill to create employement, running water and electricity for the villagers. Thakur tells Shambhu to sign a blank document so he can take legal ownership of his land. Shambhu rejects it and is given an ultimatum that he has to either pay the loan back or forget his land. Shambhu is given three months to pay back the loan. He moves to the city with his family to earn more money and pay Thakur back to end his troubles.
The movie shows the hardships and struggle of a simple villager in the city. In his quest to earn more money Shambhu has to undergo a lot of challenges. One instant is when he gets injured when carrying a heartless wealthy customer to his destination. Shambhu is very righteous. His morale is crushed when he returns to his village to see that his land has been sold and a factory is being constructed over it.
