Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaynege is regarded as one of the best romantic movies in Indian cinema. Directed by Aditya Chopra and produced by Yash Chopra this 1995 release earned over Rs. 580 million in India alone. Winning several Filmfare awards, this movie ruled the cinema’s for over fifteen years.
The multi star cast consists of Amrish Puri, Kajol, Shahrukh Khan, Anupam Kher, Farida Jalal, and Parmeet Sethi. The writers are Javed Siddiqui and Aditya Chopra. All the songs in the movie by Jatin Lalit were hits.
The movie is about Raj (Shahrukh) the wealthy son of Dharamvir Malhotra (Anupam) and Simran, the elder daughter of a conservative convenience store owner Chaudhry Baldev Singh (Amrish).
Simran is to wed Kuljeet (Parmeet) who she’s never met before but agrees to marry out of respect for her father. She begs her parents to allow her to go on a trip to Europe with her friends before she marries. Baldev allows her to go on the condition that she doesn’t betray his trust.
Simran meets Raj on this trip and eventually Raj falls in love with her. She falls in love with him when they go their separate ways. Simran confides about her feelings to her sister and her mother (Farida) and states that she doesn’t want to marry Kuljeet anymore. Baldev overhears this and taunts Simran for breaking his trust. They leave London overnight and head to Punjab, India.
Raj finds out where Simran is and assures her that he’ll marry her with the consent of her family. Baldev finds out later that Raj and Simran knew each other from the Europe trip and he’s kicked out of their house. At the end Baldev agrees to let Simran be with Raj as he realizes no one will love his daughter more than Raj.
