Intrepid Director Madhur Bhandarkar

Madhur Bhandarkar is a three-time National Award winning filmmaker. He grew up facing rough times. He is a school drop out who used to work as an errand boy at a video store where he would drop of cassettes to people from different walks of life.

He was an assistant to director Ashok Gaikwad Bhandarkar and later to Ram Gopal Varma. He has worked on the pilot episode of the TV serial Apne Rang Hazaar, which proved to be futile. His first film, Trishakti, took more than two years in the making. He seemed to have met with another dead end as this movie went unrecognized. His second film, Chandini Bar was highly acclaimed and took him to the top league of directors in Bollywood. Fortune was by his side. He has a series of successful films one after another. Page 3, a movie about the glamorous world of celebrity lifestyle did tremendously well at the box office.

He admits that his next film, Corporate was a very challenging film, as he knew that the corporates would not appreciate him for his Page 3. It was a movie about the dark side of the business world. Fashion was another film that helped Bhandarkar reach great heights in his career. It was about the fashion world and what really happened behind the cameras. Former Vice President of India and BJP leader L.K.Adwani appreciated him for his latest film; Jail, which is about the cruel realities faced by prisoners in Indian jails.

Bhandarkar often prefers to have strong females as the lead protagonist. His movies are a platform to express his views they reflect the society for what it really is. From selling chewing gum at traffic signals, he is now one of India’s leading and reputed directors and scriptwriters.

International Director, Shekhar Kapoor

Shekhar Kapoor is a man we can all be proud of. He is an Indian film director and producer, who has gained international recognition. Being the son of a doctor and journalist, his father never wanted him to get into the entertainment industry like his uncles, Vijay Anand and Dev Anand. To please his family, he became a Chartered Accountant. He moved to Great Britain and worked as an accountant and management consultant.

Shekher acted in a few older Bollywood movies and TV serials but to his dismay, his acting career never launched. Things changed in 1983, when he directed his first movie, Masoom; it won four FilmFare Awards. Mr. India, his science fiction superhero film, became the biggest movie of 1987. To this day, it remains a cult classic. His Bandit Queen, based on the life of Phoolan Devi, was a critically acclaimed film, which won several awards. His career took a drastic turn 1998 with Elizabeth, a movies about the fictitious events of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The movie won an Academy Award. Its sequel, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, was another success. Both the movies combined were nominated for nine Academy Awards. The Four Feathers and New York, I Love You are two other international works of his.

He had provided the voice of Mahatma Gandhi in the Audio book titled The Story of My Experiments with Truth. Shekhar also co-founded Virgin Comics along with Sir Richard Branson and his Virgin Group, author Deepak Chopra, and three other entrepreneurs. He won the prestigious Padmashree Awards in 2000 in the field of Arts. Shekhar Kapoor is a visionary who followed his heart and pursued his passion. Today, he has broken all the boundaries. He is a globally known director known for his eye for detail and versatility.

The Extraordinary Director Mahesh Bhatt

Mahesh Bhatt is one of India’s diverse director, producer and screenwriter. Direction was perhaps in his blood; his father and uncle were both Hindi film directors. Bhatt started his career as an assistant director. His directorial debut was with Sakat but it was not until films like Arth that he became a reputed film personality. Movies like Arth and many that followed were all inspired by his personal life. The brilliant director, who is a college dropout, covers wide genera of film from drama to comedy to thrillers. His earlier movies like Arth, Saaransh, Janam and Naam were all art parallel films.

He introduced several prominent actors into Bollywood through his movies, including his daughter Pooja Bhatt in Daddy and Sushmita Sen in Dastak.

Kartoos in 1999 was his last film as a director was. He dedicates his entire time on screenwriting now. Some of his well-known films are Duplicate, Dushman, Raaz, Jism, Murder, Gangster and Woh Lamhe. Woh Lamhe was based on actress Parveen Babi’s life, a woman with whom he used to have an intimate affair. From commercial to controversial, his films had it all! His film topics range from illegitimate births to extramarital affairs, real life family situations with a real life tragic ending! His films are more often psychological in nature. This outspoken director’s films provide challenging roles for actors to play, as the characters are those who have undergone deep emotional damage or trauma.

Bhatt has also worked on television shows like A Mouthful of Sky, Swabhimaan and Kabhi e Kabhie. He co-owns the production house Vishesh Films with brother, producer Mukesh Bhatt. He’s a spiritual man; he was interested in the teaching of Osho Rajneesh and later those of U.G. Krishnamurthi. About the latter, he even wrote a biography called U.G.Krishnamurthi: A Life in 1992.
