Black
Black is regarded as one of the best movies in Indian cinema. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and produced by him and Anshuman Swani in 2005 it has been ranked number five in the list of all-time box office hits. The movie won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi and a record breaking eleven Filmfare Awards.
The cast consists of Amitabh Bachchan, Rani Mukherji, Shernaz Patel and Nandana Sen. The writers are Sanjay, Bhavani Iyer and Prakash Kapadia. The music’s by Monty Sharma.
The movie is loosely based on Hellen Keller’s autobiography and is about Michelle McNally (Rani) was born blind, deaf and mute to Paul and Catherine (Shernaz). Frustrated by the over protective world created by her parents she becomes violent and angry throwing things around to display her rage. Her parents consider admitting Michelle in an asylum thinking she may be a threat to her younger sister Sara (Anupama).
Debraj Sahai (Amitabh) an alcoholic eccentric teacher enters Michelle’s life and helps her behave in society. He also helps her find her place amongst normal children and blossoms into a beautiful woman. She learns to be independent and finds comfort with her companion and teacher. Her sister Sara gets married but Debraj leaves Michelle’s world after twelve years have passed as his health starts failing. He’s diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease which caused him to forget everything from his past and present.
Michelle graduates at the age of forty and reunites with Debraj. She realizes his state and tries to help him. She succeeds in reminding him a little about their past and he recognizes her after he sees her in her graduation robe. The movie ends on a happy note with Michelle helping her ex-teacher by now becoming the teacher and Debraj becoming the student.
