Bandit Queen
Bandit Queen directed by Shekhar Kapur and produced by Bobby Bedi released in 1994, is regarded as one of the most controversial movies in Indian Cinema. The main star cast is Seema Biswas, Nirmal Pandey, Majoj Bajpai and Aditya Shrivastava. It was written by Ranjit Kapoor and Mala Sen.
The story is about a child Phoolan (Sunita Bhatt later Seema Biswas), who is married to an older man Puttilal. Her uneducated husband physically and sexually abuses her so she returns to her parents’ home. She belongs to a lower caste so the upper caste of Thakurs molests her from time to time. The villagers blame Phoolan for luring men and banish her from the village. She turns to the police for help but instead, they beat her up and molest her as they were paid by Babu Gujjar (Anirudh Agarwal) bandits. They abduct her and Babu Gujjar rapes her. The gang’s lieutenant Vikram Mallah Mastana (Nirmal) sees this and shoots him and they become a couple.
Thakur Shri Ram (Govind) is the main head of the gang and is released from prison. He kills Vikram and gang rapes Phoolan repeatedly for disrespecting him when he was made a pass at her earlier. She’s then stripped, beaten and paraded around the village. She finds Vikram’s old friend Man Singh (Manoj) and gathers a few men to take her revenge. She then becomes known as Phoolan Devi, the bandit queen after terrorizing villages. She finally takes half her revenge at a wedding when she shoots all of Shri Ram’s men. He however joins forces with the police to capture her. Phoolan surrenders in 1983 on the condition her gang and their families should be left alone. It is said that all charges against her were withdrawn and she was released in 1994.
