Ace Lyricist Anand Bakshi
Anand bakshi was a well-known poet and a lyricist of his time. He was the only lyricist who enjoyed such a long career in Hindi Cinema. His dream was to be a part of Bollywood, which his family did not approve of. He finally reached Bombay and he got his first break in 1956 when Bhagavan Dada signed him to write four songs for the movie Bhala Admi. He was established as a versatile lyricist with the 1970’s biggest hit; “Dum maro Dum” from the movie Hara Krishna Hara Ram. His successful career included movies like Sholay, Bobby, Veer, Hum, Mr.India, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Taal, Mohabattein, and Yaadein.
Directors like Subash Ghai and Yash Chopra preferred to have Anand Bakshi’s lyrics. Bakshi was Ghai’s lyricist for thirteen movies. Yash Chopra’s Chandini and Dil to pagal hai had Bakshi’s lyrics too. He received 4 Filmfare Awards for his memorable lyrics for the songs: “Aadmi musafir hain” (Apnapan), “Tere mere beech mein” (Ek Duujhe Ke liya), “Tujhe Dekha” (Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge) and “Ishq Bina” (Taal). Bakshi teamed up with Lakshmikant-Pyarelal and R.D Burman creating more than 250 hit songs. Mehbooba in 2008 was the last movie, which he provided lyrics for.
Bakshi suffered from heart and lungs disease as a chronic smoking. He died due to organ failure in March 2002. His death was a tragic loss to the Hindi Cinema Industry, especially for music and lyrics admirers. Even after his death directors continued to use his lyrics, which he had compiled earlier. From being part of the Indian Navy to being one of Bollywood’s leading lyricists, he had lived a long fulfilled life! His lyrics were simple for any man to understand. This elite lyricist of all time has contributed to more than 300 Hindi movies.
